The Côtes d'Armor is one of the four "Departments" which make up Brittany and is situated on its northern coast before you reach Finistère, literally the "end of the earth" as far as Northern Europe is concerned.
The Côtes d'Armor is fairly steeped in the traditions of the sea, which together with farming (both agricultural and horticultural) formed the basis of society in this area. Tourism is a relatively recent arrival on the activity scene and hence, with happily only a few exceptions, you will find the region largely non-commercialised - often a blessing in this day and age.
The men of Plouër-sur-Rance had a famous reputation for being excellent sailors, whether on the trading clippers which sailed worldwide from Saint-Malo or on the fishing fleets which went as far afield as Newfoundland ("la Terre Neuve"). And not only were they redoubtable sailors, but they were excellent boatbuilders as well.
Nowadays Plouër is a thriving country community with its own schools, shops, supermarket, garages, restaurants, and recently a popular sailing marina on the banks of the Rance. There are many fine country houses, three Châteaux, and also modern properties for the younger people who make Plouër very much a living community. Here you will find a happy blend of tradition and the contemporary.
Plouër is certainly not just a holiday dormitory town which closes down at the end of September, sadly like a number of the coastal resorts today, but an all year round attraction.
You will find much of interest not just on the coast or the river banks, but also in the countryside as well which abounds with fine properties, including numerous Châteaux and Manoirs, and lush well-tended pastures. Last but not least, the Bretons in general and the people of Plouër themselves provide a fine example of kindness and helpfulness to friends and strangers alike. Above all you will enjoy the peace and tranquility of the area, and you will always feel safe and secure.
